Peer-to-peer or fleet: which suits your trip?

Peer-to-peer

Platforms like Goboony and Yescapa let you rent a van from its private owner. You get character, personal handovers and often lower prices — but every van is different, pickup happens wherever the owner lives, and one-way trips are usually off the table.

Fleet

Companies like Roadsurfer and Indie Campers run their own standardised vans from fixed depots. You get predictable vehicles, professional check-in, flexible extras and one-way options — usually at a somewhat higher price, especially in peak season.

A simple rule of thumb

If your route starts and ends in the same place and you enjoy a van with a story, go peer-to-peer. If you want depot-to-depot flexibility, a brand-new vehicle or a one-way route, a fleet operator is the safer bet. Either way, the live price on the provider's own site is the final word — which is exactly where our buttons take you.

The jargon, translated

Deposit
A refundable amount blocked on your card at pickup — commonly around €500 — returned after the van comes back undamaged.
Excess
The maximum you pay out of pocket if something goes wrong, even with insurance. Many providers sell excess-reduction packages.
One-way fee
The surcharge for picking a van up in one city and dropping it off in another. Only fleet operators tend to offer this at all.
Mileage policy
How many kilometres are included per day. "Unlimited" means drive as far as you like; "limited" means a daily allowance with a per-kilometre charge beyond it.
Minimum driver age
The youngest a driver can be to rent — usually 18 to 25 depending on the provider, sometimes with a young-driver surcharge.

Plan by destination

The comparison works for any covered country — but for the big campervan markets we've written proper country guides: tolls, overnight rules, seasons and one-way logistics alongside the provider comparison.
