Driving & tolls

You'll drive on the left, in miles per hour, and — outside a few crossings like the M6 Toll and certain bridges and tunnels — without motorway tolls. London's ULEZ and Congestion Charge are the urban exception; most modern rental vans are ULEZ-compliant, but confirm before driving into the capital. The real skill is width: single-track lanes with passing places in Cornwall and the Highlands are where a few days of experience start to show.

Overnight stops & wild camping

England and Wales offer no general right to stay overnight: land is private, so use campsites, pub-stopover schemes and landowner arrangements. Scotland's celebrated access rights cover tents but not vehicles — roadside overnighting is instead tolerated at many designated and traditional spots, though pressure on the NC500 means local signs should be taken at face value. Book the coastal honeypots ahead in summer.

When to go

May, June and September are the sweet spots: long daylight in Scotland, quieter roads, and no school-holiday surge. Late July and August are the peak everywhere and get booked far ahead. In the Highlands, midge season (roughly June to September) is real — park somewhere breezy, screen your windows, and evenings improve enormously.

Pickup & one-way trips

Depots cluster in and around London, with more in cities like Manchester and Edinburgh, and one-way rentals between British stations are offered on selected routes. Taking a rental van across to Ireland or the continent is provider-specific — some allow it with prior declaration, some don't — so check the ferry policy before you book a crossing.

In England and Wales, not without the landowner's permission — the practical answer is campsites and pub-stopover schemes. In Scotland, outdoor access rights famously cover wild camping but stop at the roadside: vehicles rely on tolerance and designated spots, which are plentiful but locally signed. When a sign says no overnighting, believe it.

Can I take a rental campervan from Britain to Ireland or France?

Only if the provider allows it: policies differ on ferries, insurance cover abroad and advance declaration. Fleet operators publish their rules; peer-to-peer owners set their own. Sort it out before booking the crossing, not at the port.

Is driving on the left difficult in a campervan?
