Italy compresses more variety into one country than anywhere else you can drive a campervan: Dolomites passes, Tuscan back roads, volcanic islands and a thousand small towns in between. All the providers we track operate here, and the country's area di sosta network makes van life easier than its reputation suggests.

Renting a campervan in Italien: what to know

Driving & tolls

Autostrade charge distance-based tolls, and many campervans pay a higher class than cars because of their height. The rule that really matters, though, is the ZTL — the limited-traffic zones guarding almost every historic centre. Cameras enforce them automatically and the fines arrive months later, so never follow a sat-nav into an old town: park outside the walls and walk in. On the Amalfi Coast and similar roads, larger vehicles face seasonal restrictions.

Overnight stops & wild camping

Italian rules distinguish sosta — parking, wheels down, everything inside the van, generally allowed where parking is — from campeggio, camping behaviour, which is regulated and prohibited outside sites in many regions and most tourist hotspots. Dedicated aree di sosta are widespread and cheap, and farm-stay networks let you overnight at vineyards and agriturismi, which may be the best of Italy in a single stop.

When to go

July and August bring heat and crowds to the coasts and lakes; May–June and September–October are the classic windows, with the autumn harvest a joy in wine country. Winter works two ways: ski-area sosta spots in the Dolomites for the snow crowd, and Sicily or Sardinia staying mild — though island trips need ferry planning.

Pickup & one-way trips

Fleet depots sit mostly in the north and centre — Milan, Venice, Rome and around — so one-way routes down the boot are possible with the fleet operators where routes are offered, for a fee that varies with distance and season. For Sicily and Sardinia, check the provider's ferry policy before booking a crossing; peer-to-peer owners set their own island rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is a ZTL and why does it matter in a campervan?

A zona a traffico limitato is a camera-enforced restricted zone around a historic centre; entering without a permit means an automatic fine per pass, often arriving by post long after the trip. In a campervan you never want to be inside one — park at a signed lot or sosta area outside and walk or take the bus in.

Can I wild camp in Italy?

Free camping is restricted in much of the country and firmly enforced in tourist areas, but overnight parking without camping behaviour is treated more leniently. The practical answer is the area di sosta network plus campsites and agriturismi — cheap, legal and everywhere.

Do campervans pay more on Italian autostrade?

Often, yes: the toll class rises with height and axle count, so many campervans sit a class above cars. Tolls are distance-based — take a ticket on entry, pay on exit — and cards are accepted at the barriers.
