Campervan hire in Deutschland

Compare the providers operating in Deutschland on deposits, insurance, mileage and one-way rules — then jump into each one's live search with your dates pre-filled. No prices here: those come live from the provider.

Germany is Europe's campervan heartland: more motorhomes are registered here than anywhere else on the continent, the Stellplatz network is the densest in the world, and all the providers we track operate here — including Roadsurfer, whose home market this is. Distances are honest, roads are excellent, and you're never far from a bakery.

Renting a campervan in Deutschland: what to know

Driving & tolls

Motorways are toll-free for campervans under 3.5 tonnes — no vignette, no charges. What catches visitors instead are the Umweltzonen: many city centres require a green emissions sticker (Umweltplakette) on the windscreen. Rental vans normally carry one, but check before you drive into a city. On derestricted autobahn stretches, a loaded campervan is happiest at 100–120 km/h regardless of what the sports cars are doing.

Overnight stops & wild camping

Wild camping as such isn't permitted, but German law lets you sleep one night in your vehicle where parking is allowed, to restore your fitness to drive — no awning, no chairs, no camping behaviour. In practice you'll rarely need to lean on that rule: Germany has thousands of dedicated Stellplätze, cheap or free motorhome stopovers, often with water and disposal, sometimes right in the middle of town.

When to go

May to September is the main season, with July and August the crunch — book several months ahead for those, and watch the public-holiday “bridge days” when half the country takes a long weekend. April and October are quieter and often lovely. Winter trips are genuinely feasible (Christmas markets, ski valleys) if the van has a proper heater — check the listing.

Pickup & one-way trips

Fleet operators have dense station networks here, so one-way routes like Munich to Hamburg are realistic, usually for a fixed fee. Peer-to-peer rentals from Goboony and Yescapa return to the owner's location, so plan a loop if you rent privately.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special licence to drive a campervan in Germany?

A standard car licence (category B) covers vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes, which includes almost every rental campervan. Heavier motorhomes need a C1 licence — if you only hold B, stick to vans under 3.5 tonnes and you'll still have plenty of choice.

Can I sleep anywhere in my campervan in Germany?

You may spend one night in the vehicle wherever parking is legal, to restore your fitness to drive — but it must look like parking, not camping. For anything more, use the excellent Stellplatz network or a campsite; fines for real wild camping vary by federal state.

Is the autobahn free for campervans?

Yes. Germany currently has no motorway toll for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, and no vignette. Budget instead for city emissions stickers and, in high season, for busy fuel stops on the main north–south routes.
