What changed in February 2026?

The maximum support nearly doubled from €6,500 to €12,500: the €6,500 heat pump grant stayed, and SEAI added up to €2,000 for central heating upgrades (radiators, cylinder, pipework) and a €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus for homes switching off oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage heating.

What is the Heat Loss Indicator rule?

Your home must lose heat slowly enough for a heat pump to run efficiently: HLI ≤ 2.0 W/K·m², or up to 2.3 with a technical assessor's justification. If your current BER already shows HLI ≤ 2.3, you may not need a separate technical assessment. If you're above that, insulate first — attic and wall insulation have their own SEAI grants and drop your HLI fast.

Is a heat pump really cheaper to run than oil?

Usually, but not dramatically at standard electricity rates — the calculator above shows the honest gap. The real wins: a well-designed system (SCOP 4+), a smart tariff (running the heat pump on cheap night rates), and pairing with solar PV. Plus a heat pump removes the ~2,000 kg of CO₂ a year an oil boiler emits and future-proofs against carbon tax on kerosene, which rises every budget.

What does an air-to-water retrofit actually cost?

Typically €13,000–€18,000 all-in for an average Irish home (heat pump, cylinder, some emitter upgrades) before the grant. Ground source runs €20,000+. Beware quotes that skip radiator upgrades — undersized emitters are the number-one cause of disappointing running costs.

Can I get the grant through the One Stop Shop instead?

Yes — if you're doing a deeper retrofit (insulation + heat pump + solar together), the One Stop Shop route bundles higher combined grants and manages everything, in exchange for less installer choice. For a heat-pump-only job, the individual grant route above is simpler.
